Before The List - Chapter 1 - MasterDuelistMichael (2024)

Chapter Text

'Hailey's On It!' premieres 3 weeks from Thursday - June 8th - and I'm super hyped right now! So much so that I'm gonna try and make the first fanfic for the new Disney show! This will be kind of a prequel to the actual series, explain how Hailey became so risk-averse, lead right into that fateful New Year's Eve. Here we go!

We find ourselves in Oceanside, California, just about an hour north of San Diego. At a gold-painted house in a quaint neighborhood along the coast, we see a 10 year old girl with dark brunette hair and deep brown eyes - meet Hailey Banks.

Her mother, Patricia Banks came in while she was getting ready to celebrate her 10th birthday with her childhood best friend - Scott Denoga.

"You're up super early, Hailey..." her mom said, hugging her. "Happy Birthday, sweetheart!"

"Thanks, mom!" Hailey giggled, hugging her mom. "Got a big day with Scott today!"

"Guess I shouldn't expect anything less from you. You and Scott always spend the day together on your birthday, Hailey."

And she was right. Scott and Hailey have been best friends since they were 3 years old and have spent basically every waking moment of their lives together. Hailey has started to harbor a bit of a secret crush on Scott, but isn't sure if she wants to act on it out of fear of wrecking their friendship.

"You have no idea how wild we can get, mom!"

"I think I might, sweetheart. By the way, I got your favorite breakfast downstairs! - Strawberry chocolate chip waffles!"

Hailey's eyes lit up hearing her favorite breakfast was ready. She hugged her mom again to the point of crushing her.

"THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!" Hailey said quickly. "I'll be right down after I fix up my hair!"

"Okay, don't take too long, though! Isn't Scott supposed to be here around 10?" her mom asked.

"Relax mom! It's only 7! I've got plenty of time!"

As Hailey's mom showed herself out of her young daughter's room, Hailey finished fixing up her hair and rushed down the stairs to her parents.

"Good morning, mom and dad!"

"Good morning, little wahini! Happy birthday!" her father - Kai Banks - greeted, kissing Hailey on the cheek.

"Thanks, dad!" Hailey said as she sat down to eat her pancakes.

"So, Hailey...you and Scott today?" Her mom teased.

"MOM! Don't go there! He's just my best friend!"

"Alright, alright! I was just teasing, Hailey!"

"Personally, I wouldn't be opposed to you and Scott dating," her father admitted. "Would be better than that other girl he's going after. What's her name again?"

"Kristine Sanchez," Hailey said. Kristine was the most popular girl in school and her mere presence turned all the boys' heads, including Scott Denoga. There were even times where she literally forced herself onto Scott because for some strange reason, she knew it would provoke Hailey. "That girl literally grinds my gears."

"She's trying to bait you, Hailey," her mom said. "I should know. I've been there, done that. She's trying to force you into admitting your crush on Scott. Don't let her play you. When you feel you're ready to admit your crush on Scott, go for it."

"As always, mom...you're right. When I feel I'm ready to admit I like Scott, I'll tell him," Hailey said as she finished her breakfast. "Now to get dressed and wait for Scott to get here!" she squealed cheerfully as she ran upstairs to her room.

She changed out of her Phineas and Ferb pajamas and into her white and red top, blue jean overalls and pink slip on shoes. After tying her hair into her signature ponytail, she put on her mother's eye liner and her cinnamon lip gloss just as the doorbell rang.

"That must be Scott!"

Hailey rushed down the stairs only to trip and fall down, yet stick the landing and open the door revealing her childhood best friend Scott Denoga.

"Happy Birthday, Hailey!" Scott greeted, hugging Hailey.

"Aw! Thanks, Scott! Ready to go?"

"Of course!"

"Let's be off, then! Bye, mom and dad!"

"Bye, little wahini! Have fun on your date with Scott!" Kai called out as Hailey and Scott left.

"What was with your dad back there, Hailey?" Scott asked.

"Mom's worse. She and dad are both wanting us as boyfriend/girlfriend...like that'll ever happen..." Hailey scoffed.

"I know, right? My mom's the same way!" Scott confessed, letting off an exasperated groan. "Anyway, Oceanside Summer Fest is this week! Shall we hit up Boomers' Vista first then go to Martin Luther King Jr. Park for Summer Fest?"

"You know me so well, Scott!" Hailey giggled, hugging Scott and not noticing the blush creeping up on her face.

"Well, we've only known each other since we were 3 years old! Forgot to mention that my elder cousin works at Boomers' Vista and I already told her we're coming, so we're set up..."

"You...are so awesome, Scott!"

Boomers' Vista was only about a 30 minute rollerskate from Hailey's house. Once there, Scott's cousin Sydney got the duo set up, wished Hailey a happy birthday and sent the duo off on their way. Hailey and Scott played laser tag, mini-golf (Hailey won mini-golf, by the way), rode bumper boats, did the batting cages and even had lunch at the Johnny Rockets there. But things took a dramatic turn on the go-karts.

Late in a race, Hailey was leading, Scott was 2nd protecting the lead from Kristine Sanchez. Coming to the checkers, Kristine got into Scott's car, ejecting Scott from his car and sending him flying, tumbling from a tire barrier into a nearby fence right as Hailey took the checkered flag.

"Scott? Scott?" Hailey called out.

"Over here..." Scott groaned, banged up from Kristine wrecking him.

"Oh no! SCOTT!" Hailey screamed, drawing the attention of Scott's cousin Sydney. Sydney was a tall brunette, 6 years older than Scott and about to enter her junior year of high school.

"What happened here, Hailey?" Sydney asked.

"Kris...Kristine wrecked me while I was trying to protect Hailey," Scott said, clearly in pain.

"The nerve of that jerk!" Sydney raged. If there's one thing that gets on Sydney's goat, it's someone messing with family. "Someone's calling 911 right now; Scott, I'll call your mom. Hailey, you call your parents."

Hailey just gave a nod as tears started streaming from her eyes. How could she have let this happen to Scott? Within an hour, maybe an hour and a half, the Denoga and Banks families were at UC San Diego Medical Center, Hailey still crying her eyes out.

"This is the absolute worst birthday ever!" Hailey cried out. "Scott and I were supposed to be at Oceanside Summer Fest right now! But because of Kristine Sanchez, that's not happening!"

"Hailey..." her dad said.

"Why is it that whenever something cool goes on in my life, Kristine ruins it?"

"Typical mean girls, I guess..." Sydney deadpanned as the doctor came out. He explained that Scott suffered a broken right arm and mild concussion from the wreck and that he'll be out of commission at least a month, if not more.

"It's all my fault...I should've been more careful. I promise to be more careful from now on..." Hailey said remorsefully.

"Now don't say that, Hailey," Scott said from his hospital bed. "I had fun today...until the wreck, that is. How about you?"

Hailey smiled back at Scott. "I guess I had fun. Still, you getting injured...worst birthday ever..."

"Hey, Hailey...I'll make it up to you somehow..."

"Promise?"

"Of course, Hailey."

So that's how Hailey Banks became so risk-averse - Kristine caused Scott to get severely injured during Hailey's 10th birthday, traumatizing Hailey and causing her not to try new things. Next up, the list begins to take shape...SEE YA THEN!
